Save the video a page is playing.

Savvid is a Chrome extension. It lists the video and audio streams the current tab plays and saves the one you choose as a single file in your Downloads folder, converted to MP4 or MKV inside your browser. No companion app, no server, no account.

Coming to the Chrome Web Store.

How it works

  1. Open a page and start playing the video.
  2. Click the Savvid icon in the toolbar. What the page loaded is listed with its length and quality options.
  3. Pick a quality and press the download button. The parts are fetched and joined into one file inside your browser, then saved to your Downloads folder.

What it can do

  • Recognises HLS (.m3u8) and DASH (.mpd) streams and plain media files such as MP4 and WebM.
  • Lets you choose the quality and, when there is more than one, the audio language.
  • Joins the parts into one MP4 or MKV file with a converter that ships inside the extension: libav.js, an open-source build of FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly.
  • Saves just the sound as M4A or MP3.
  • Records live HLS broadcasts for 10, 30 or 60 minutes, or until you stop.
  • Saves subtitles when the stream includes them.
  • Shows progress in its Downloads tab, with pause, resume, cancel and retry.

What it does not do

  • It does not work on YouTube.
  • It cannot save DRM-protected content, such as films and shows from paid streaming services. Those are listed as protected, with no download button.
  • Some players build the picture inside the page without a playlist an extension can read. Those are not listed.
  • Please save only content you own or have permission to keep.

Privacy

Everything happens in your browser. There is no server, no account, no analytics and no ads. Savvid reads the network requests of your tabs only to find streams, keeps its settings and history on your computer, and sends nothing about you or your browsing to anyone. Media comes straight from the site's own servers.
